1. Store the credit once, with the image

The media library is the single source of truth. Photographer, source, license and link belong in image fields — not in captions that get deleted with the next redesign.

2. Render everywhere the image appears

A credit system must follow the image: into posts, into archives, into og:image reuse. Manual captions fail exactly there; automation from media fields does not.

3. Read what’s already in the file

Professional photos ship IPTC creator fields. Importing them on upload removes the most error-prone manual step — most credits are already in the file when it arrives.

Is a collected credits page enough?

Often yes, if it’s linked from every page and names the concrete images. Per-image display is the safer default; use both when in doubt.

What about stock licenses without attribution?

Store the license anyway. When a claim letter arrives three years later, the stored license answers it in one minute.

Image Credit Companion automates all three steps.

Media-library fields, site-wide rendering, IPTC import.
